Two New Yorker writers won Mirror Awards today for their media coverage, while the Washington Post’s Erik Wemple implored media executives to be as open with media reporters as they expect sources to be with their own journalists.
Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications held its annual awards luncheon Wednesday in New York to “honor the reporters, editors and teams of writers who hold a mirror to their own industry for the public’s benefit.”
Here’s the full list of winners:
— Best Single Article, Traditional/Legacy Media: Rachel Aviv, for a New Yorker piece on how the Newtown Bee covered the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.
— Best Single Article, Digital Media: Erik Wemple of the Washington Post for his look at Politico’s Mike Allen as “a native-advertising pioneer.” (Poynter’s Kristen Hare was nominated in the category for her account of how the Toronto Star covered the Rob Ford story.)

— Best Commentary, Traditional/Legacy Media: Michael Meyer, for three pieces at Columbia Journalism Review.
— Best Commentary, Digital Media: Jina Moore, for pieces in The Atlantic, Columbia Journalism Review, and Salon.
— John M. Higgins Award for Best In-Depth/Enterprise Reporting: Frank Greve, for a CQ Researcher story that asks, “is reporting on global conflict worth the risk?”
