Vicki Krueger is the Director of Interactive Learning and has been managing News University for 3 years and has been with the project for 10 years.
Ten years ago, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation made an investment in e-learning at Poynter. Since then, News University has grown to more than 325,000 users in 200 countries and territories around the world, 400 courses, and training in seven languages. About 2,000 people a week enroll in e-learning modules at NewsU. It has succeeded beyond our wildest dreams.
Now, in honor of NewsU’s 10th birthday, Knight is making a new investment of $195,000 in the leading online training site for journalists, educators and anyone interested in the craft and values of journalism. Knight funding will support the first phase of the most ambitious rethinking and retooling of Poynter NewsU since it was launched in April 2005.
“This grant will expand NewsU’s capacity as the leader in online training that shapes the transformation of journalists worldwide and allows them to experience Poynter everywhere,” said Poynter President Tim Franklin. “We are grateful that we can continue Knight’s partnership to help us reach NewsU’s full potential across new platforms with new tools and technologies.”
With this funding, Poynter will begin the process of creating the next generation of e-learning in scalable, shareable and adaptable ways that reach a global audience. We will rely on 10 years of e-learning expertise and be guided by design thinking, an approach that incorporates user feedback to ensure audience needs are built into the innovation process.
When completed, NewsU will be even more interactive, more engaging and more essential as the journalism e-learning home for anyone who wants to share quality information.
Whether it’s an e-learning course on a laptop or a learning game on a smartphone, our goal is simple but ambitious: to ensure no one interested in sharing news misses an opportunity for training.
