FOR THE LOVE OF FACEBOOK

For all of the people leaving Facebook (or at least saying they are), researchers have found that a majority of users find so much value in the social network that you would need to pay them to leave it. On average, participants in the study said they would need $1,000 to deactivate their accounts for a full year. College students asked for $2,000. Despite Facebook’s poor publicity in 2018, the site does still provide an enticing service — easy connections with friends and family (and factually incorrect but amusing political memes) — without ever asking users for a single dollar.

PROPUBLICA ANNOUNCES ‘EMERGING REPORTERS’

Now in its fourth year, ProPublica’s Emerging Reporters Program  “aims to eliminate financial barriers to pursuing investigative journalism for students from underrepresented backgrounds.” The five selected students will get a stipend, mentorship and conference support. Former fellows have gone on to work at publications like Vox and the Atlantic.

The five are Ethan Bakuli, the University of Massachusetts-Amherst; Andrew Jones, the University of Houston; Jodi-Ann Malarbe, CUNY Brooklyn College; Brian Munoz,  Southern Illinois University; and Briana Rice, the University of Cincinnati.

RJI LOOKING FOR FELLOWS

From now until Jan. 31, the Reynolds Journalism Institute is accepting applications for 2019-20 fellows.

“RJI is looking to advance new products, services, ideas and storytelling techniques with funding, mentoring, testing and promotion. RJI offers three types of fellowships,” according to an announcement. “Residential fellows earn $80,000 and spend eight months at the Missouri School of Journalism. Want to work from your home base? We offer $20,000 non-residential fellowships. Newsrooms and civil society organizations can apply for institutional fellowships that offer $20,000 stipends. All three options include additional funds for travel, technical development and marketing. “
