American democracy depends upon the integrity of its elections. In 2016, Russia interfered in the U.S. election. It interfered through messaging on social media platforms, and its agents broke into computer systems, stole documents, then released them to the media. The best documentation of what happened has been the Mueller Report, a document produced by the Office of the Special Counsel, Robert S. Mueller III.

The fact-checkers at PolitiFact have a special devotion to primary documents, which tend to be sharp knives cutting through puffery and exaggeration. This summer, PolitiFact invited its readers to read the Mueller Report with the fact-checkers as part of an online book club. The book club’s intent is not to take sides or come to a predetermined conclusion. Rather, the goal is to keep an open mind while looking at facts in order to determine what actually happened.

What Will I Learn

The online book club’s live chat will engage readers and participants in:

  • An overview of the Mueller report and what it covers
  • Evaluating the U.S. legal system and how it is structured to handle election interference
  • Gaining an understanding of the system of checks and balances that exists between Congress, the courts and the presidency, including the impeachment process
  • A discussion of the media’s role in elections and creating an informed electorate, as well as the media’s missteps in covering elections and the presidency
