This Poynter course is back by popular demand! Over a period of four weeks, you will learn to tell stories from your life in ways that resonate with others, whether in print or online. With instruction and coaching from NPR’s Keith Woods, you’ll develop stronger writing habits. You’ll examine other personal essays and study storytelling conventions to discover keys to success. And by the end of the course, you will turn a simple idea into an essay that an editor wants to publish and the public wants to read.

The content of this course unfolds over several weeks. Except for several live discussions, you’ll be able to learn on a schedule that works for you. The minimum time commitment each week is three to four hours.

Live workshops will take place:

  • Monday, Jan. 25: noon-1 p.m.
  • Monday, Feb. 1: noon-1 p.m.
  • Monday, Feb. 8: noon-1 p.m.
  • Friday, Feb. 19: noon-2 p.m.

All times are in the Eastern time zone.

If you’re unable to attend a live session, there will be a recording available.
