The New York Times took another step in its quest for global domination Wednesday when it announced the debut of a Spanish-language version of its news app for Android users.
The app, which is available today, comes as The New York Times has announced a number of initiatives to boost its readership abroad, including the creation of a a Mexico City-based Spanish-language website.
The app will feature all the Times’ original Spanish-language journalism daily, plus between 10 and 15 translated stories from newspaper’s English edition. It will include narrative journalism, investigations, opinion columns, reviews and videos.
The New York Times has dedicated $50 million to the three-year international expansion initiative, dubbed NYT Global, and put significant editorial and business muscle behind it: Joseph Kahn, the paper’s assistant masthead editor for international, is overseeing the coverage. Stephen Dunbar-Johnson, The Times’ international president, is leading its business operations.
