Why Tampa Bay needs the arts — and arts journalism.
With world-famous museums like the Dali, award-winning performing arts institutions like American Stage and the Florida Orchestra, and intimate venues for diverse, independent artists like Studio @620, Tampa Bay is rich in arts and culture.
But in many ways, these organizations depend on local media. The way people get news and advice on how to spend their free time is rapidly changing. And when newsroom budgets get tight, arts coverage is often the first thing to go. News organizations have fewer reporters to cover music, art exhibits, theater and more.
Less coverage can have a direct impact on ticket sales, awareness and support. What does this mean for arts organizations in Tampa Bay, and what can the community, news media and arts leaders do to help?
Join Poynter for a community conversation about the interdependent relationship between journalism and the local arts on Monday, May 6. Stephanie Hayes, the deputy editor, features at the Tampa Bay Times, will moderate the conversation featuring:
Michael Francis
Conductor and The Jay B and Marsha Starkey Chair
The Florida Orchestra
Stephanie Gularte
CEO/Producing Artistic Director
American Stage
Hank Hine
Executive Director
The Dali Museum
Bob Devin Jones
Co-Founder & Artistic Director
Studio @620
These four prominent arts leaders will talk about how they build a community around their organizations  — and how they sell tickets — as the media environment changes.
