Washington City Paper is offering to pay the fines of anyone who gets a citation for possessing marijuana in Washington, D.C. after midnight Thursday. That’s when the city’s new law that decriminalizes holding small amounts of marijuana takes effect.
While noting the new law is a “big improvement,” City Paper Editor Mike Madden writes the paper is “curious to see how it’ll be enforced.”
So we’ll make an offer to the large, large numbers of people living here who have at some point possessed pot: If you get a citation under the new law, send us a picture of the citation and tell us your story, and if you’re one of the first five people we hear from at potfine@washingtoncitypaper.com, we’ll pay your $25 fine.
There are some conditions: You’ve got to send a photo of your citation, and you have to let the paper (which I used to work for) know who you are. It won’t publish your name if you don’t want it out there, though.
