The South Korean news site OhmyNews.com, now four years old, pioneered the concept of the “citizen journalist.” You’ve probably read about the site. (Here’s an old Dan Gillmor profile.) At last, OhmyNews is experimenting with an English-language version, so you can get a better sense of the quality of the content presented on the site. Alas, while some articles have been translated into English, the site’s navigation has not. Be sure to read Yi Sang Ho‘s essay in celebration of the site’s fourth birthday. He describes his web news organization as one that “has no manners” — a compliment meaning that it reaches outside of the mainstream by being critical where traditional news companies are afraid or “too well mannered” to be. OhmyNews has around 35 dedicated staff reporters; on any given day, more than 30,000 citizen reporters post their stories to the site.
