John Beale is a general assignment journalist in his 19th year with the Pittsbugh Post-Gazette. He is a graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a bachelor’s degree in journalism.

Beale appeared in “Best Newspaper Writing 2001” after winning the first Community Service Photojournalism award in the annual American Society of Newspaper Editors contest. His winning entry, “Our Community of Faith,” explored the many forms of worship practiced in Pittsburgh.

Beale’s work has won dozens of awards through the years. He is a six-time winner of Photographer of the Year honors awarded by the News Photographers Association of Greater Pittsburgh. In 2003, his action photo from a Pittsburgh Steelers game was named Photo of the Year by the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

His work has captured other local, regional, and national awards from such organizations as Sigma Delta Chi, the Press Photographers Association Pictures of the Year, the Society of News Design, National Healiners, the Clarion Awards, and the Inland Press Association.

Beale and his wife, Janis, a child-care consultant for the Head Start program in suburban Pittsburgh, have two children: Brandon, 16, and Bethany, 11.
