Poynter’s International Fact-Checking Network, in partnership with SNUFactCheck, is pleased to announce the expert speakers who will present headline addresses during GlobalFact 10, the world’s largest fact-checking summit.

Keynoting the 10th anniversary of the conference, in Seoul, South Korea from June 28-30, will be a leading researcher on cognitive bias, a journalist who has investigated Russian trolling operations, and an expert in how social media companies are dealing with mis- and disinformation.

“The need for fact-checking to fight mis- and disinformation around the world is stronger than ever,” said Enock Nyariki, community and impact manager at the IFCN. “We’re very fortunate to have such distinguished voices sharing their knowledge and strategies with IFCN’s member organizations.”

The speakers are:

Dr. Eun-Ju Lee, Seoul National University — June 28

Lee, the keynote speaker for the conference’s first day, themed “The State of Fact-Checking,”  will share her understanding of the cognitive biases that cause people to fall for mis- and disinformation and notable changes in the information environment. She will introduce research findings that suggest the potential as well as limitations of media literacy interventions and fact checks. Lee’s recent research centers on when people are more susceptible to false information, how to enhance the effectiveness of corrective information, and how technological advancements (most notably AI) alter communication processes and effects. She has co-edited Media Psychology and served as the editor-in-chief of Human Communication Research. She is a fellow of the International Communication Association (ICA) and its current president.

Jessikka Aro, investigative journalist — June 29

Finnish journalist and author Jessikka Aro has spent years investigating the activities of pro-Russian internet trolls, including writing the 2019 book, “Putin’s Troll Army” and the 2022 book, “Putin’s Trolls: On the Frontlines of Russia’s Information War Against the World.” She will give the keynote address for the second day of the conference, which focuses on elections and democracy. Because of her work identifying Russia’s misinformation efforts, she became the target of a “severe and ongoing international propaganda and hate speech campaign,” according to the International Women’s Media Foundation. In 2019, she was slated to receive the International Women of Courage Award from the U.S. State Department, but it was rescinded after her criticism of then-president Donald Trump was found on social media.

Yoel Roth, social media executive — June 30

Yoel Roth, the former head of trust and safety at Twitter, will give the keynote on Day 3, themed around AI and the future. At Twitter, Roth led a 220-person organization responsible for Twitter’s content moderation, integrity and platform security efforts, and designed the strategy for the platform’s work to combat harmful misinformation. He will take participants behind the scenes of Twitter during Elon Musk’s first weeks in charge and candidly assess how social media companies are faring in their fight against mis- and disinformation. After leaving Twitter, Roth became a technology policy fellow at the University of California, Berkeley’s Goldman School of Public Policy.
