RENO, Nev. (AP) – Retired Monsignor Robert Bowling of St. Therese the Little Flower Church died Saturday at his Reno home after a battle with cancer. He was 75.
He died only four days after the Archdiocese of Louisville, Ky., announced a settlement over allegations of sexual abuse by priests that includes lawsuits filed by women against Bowling.
The $25.7 million settlement covering 243 victims is one of the largest payments by the Roman Catholic Church over clergy sexual abuse allegations in the country.
Eleven of the suits involved allegations against Bowling. Most of the claims allege that abuse occurred while Bowling was working in Kentucky from 1955 to 1965, though one woman claimed he molested her at a Reno hospital in 1983 when she was six months pregnant.
