Former New York Times Magazine contributing writer Michael Finkel‘s apology is on the second-to-last page of his new book, “True Story: Murder, Memoir, Mea Culpa.” He was fired in 2002 after admitting that he created a composite character for his Nov. 18, 2001 piece titled “Is Youssouf Male a Slave?” Finkel tells Sheelah Kolhatkar: “Definitely, there was no implication from my editors anywhere that I should break any rules. To bend them, perhaps, but not break.”
