To mark its 10th anniversary, the portal Terra.com launched a $10 million overhaul on Jan. 7 in the 18 Latin American countries where it has presence. It has a phased plan, dubbed the Atom Project, to launch new features (including “third generation social networking tools”) on the seventh day of each month this year.

PR NewsWire reports that the Atom Project’s development involved 400 staffers across all 18 countries. In each market, Terra competes for visitors with the main local news sites. Terra claims 60 million unique visitors per month in Latin America. The Interactive Advertising Bureau reported that in Chile, Terra had 4.4 million visitors last November. Meanwhile, the site of the popular tabloid paper Lun.com reported 3.7 million visitors in the same month.

Terra.com also offers an English-language portal.
