If you’re trying to figure out what the heck the encoding settings should be for video on the iPad, Jan Ozer has taken a look at the trade-offs in file size and quality and done a round-up of settings. (Jan has become a friend over the last couple of years as I bugged him about best practices in video compression and encoding.)

He suggests that many videos can be encoded at the Apple-recommended resolution of 640×360 pixels, even though the screen size is 1024 wide, unless you’ve got a lot of fine detail. I won’t bog this post down with more technical detail, but if you’re adding iPad encoding to your video batch files, his suggestions will give you a good place to start.
