Editors at the University of Virginia’s Cavalier Daily got into trouble with the school’s Honor Committee for writing about a plagiarist on their staff and reporting that the case was turned over to the committee. Editor-in-chief Jason Ally — accused of violating the committee’s confidentiality rules — was “put on trial” Tuesday night. The University Judiciary Committee eventually decided it didn’t have jurisdiction to rule in the case. “The ruling itself showed that there are some areas where student government does not have jurisdiction over student press,” says the editor. “I’ll be the first to acknowledge that it is not a blank slate for student press to do whatever it sees fit without any sort of accountability.
