The New York Times Magazine Tuesday debuted the first new feature in its long-awaited redesign: “Ethicists,” a weekly podcast produced in partnership with Slate.
The podcast, a re-imagination of the magazine’s longtime “The Ethicist” column, will feature three ethicists answering questions for a half-hour. The panelists are Politico media columnist Jack Shafer, novelist Amy Bloom and constitutional law professor Kenji Yoshino. The print and online column will be an edited version of the podcast, according to a release from The New York Times.
New York Times Magazine Editor-in-Chief Jake Silverstein hinted at the new podcast in an editor’s column published Friday that outlined a larger redesign for the magazine. In the column, Silverstein announced that “The Ethicist,” would no longer be written by Chuck Klosterman. He also promised “new columns, new columnists, new page concepts and layouts, new features and new typefaces.”
The redesign is only the latest step in a gradual evolution that has shaped the magazine since Silverstein was appointed editor in March. Since then, the masthead of the magazine has been transformed, with a number of new contributors and editors added. In July, the magazine got a new publisher in Andy Wright, who was previously senior vice president of advertising at The New York Times Company.
The recent staff writer appointments include op-ed columnist Maureen Dowd, former Slate senior editor Emily Bazelon and business columnist Jenna Wortham. New faces among the editing ranks include deputy editor Jessica Lustig and digital deputy editor Charles Homans.
